Athens City Councilwoman Debbie Phillips, D-4th ward, will announce her candidacy for the Ohio House of Representatives today at the Third Sun Solar and Wind Power.
If elected to represent the 92nd district, Phillips will serve Athens, Meigs and Morgan counties. Republican Jimmy Stewart, whom Phillips ran against in 2006, currently serves the district.
Funding for Athens area schools and utilizing renewable energy sources are key points of her campaign, Phillips said.
Phillips decided to run because, We (Athens) need someone who listens to the people of the district
she said.
Phillips will leave her 4th ward council seat if elected, she said. Since the election is in the middle of the term, it is likely that a new member will be appointed rather than elected, Phillips said.
