Suited for Playboy

Michael Blaine Mohn, a freshman from Wilton, Conn., recently was picked by Playboy from among several hundred applicants as one of seven best dressed men in colleges across the nation and is featured in this month's issue of the magazine.

Mohn, also one of three Playboy campus representatives at Ohio University, talks with Post reporter Stephanie Hummel about the celebrity he said he was fortunate to meet, what it's like being part of a professional photo shoot and life as a Best Dressed Man on Campus.

The Post: How did you hear about Playboy's Best Dressed Man on Campus list?

Michael Blaine Mohn: Well, I heard about it through being a (Playboy) campus rep. So when they send out fliers and things like that to give out to people to see if they want to apply, I applied myself. And I ended up getting it.

Post: Let's go into a little more about your style, which got you a spot on the list. How would you describe your style?

Mohn: I'd say more of like a classic look. More like clean and preppy maybe. I care about how I look. I don't like to be too shabby or anything; I like to be clean cut.

Post: So when you were selected for the list, how did you find out?

Mohn: Through an e-mail. They flew us out to New York City, and they put us up in a hotel, seven of us, and that was all paid for, and they gave us $200 spending cash to have in the city, because they don't provide dinner for us. And we had a photo shoot with Nigel Barker (fashion photographer) from America's Next Top Model; he's one of the judges.

Post: The bald guy! What's he like in person?

Mohn: He's a great guy. He was very encouraging of me, and gave me tips about the business and told me I should continue with it. He pulled me aside immediately and said everything came out great and then had a talk with me about what I should do if I want to continue it, which was really cool to hear from him. It was a great, great experience.

Post: What was the shoot itself like?

Mohn: It was a little weird at first, being in a room with all these people staring at you telling you all these certain different things to do, like with your face, and listening to Nigel, and just having these extremely blinding bulbs going off in your face with a flash. But I thought it was one of the best experiences of my life. I met a lot of great people, and I took a lot from it.

Post: How did your friends and family respond (to the list)?

Mohn: My family loves it. They think it's great. They've always told me I should do modeling, especially my mom. My friends kind of make fun of me for it, just because it's a guy in Playboy, you know. It's something unique. When you hear somebody say, 'Oh my friend's in Playboy,' you expect it to be a girl, and it's a guy. I mean, they like it; they think it's funny.

Post: What about the models themselves? Were they Playboy bunnies?

Mohn: They're not bunnies, they're just hired models that are in New York City. The one I was with was kind of quiet, but the other one was more social. The one I had was strictly business, kind of. She wasn't very outgoing.

Post: Did you pick your own (clothing)?

Mohn: We got to pick part of it. (Playboy) would have the final decision. They bring the fashion director over, Nigel over, and other assistants and they would all conference about it. They wanted us to wear something that we could see ourselves wearing. So we picked something out, and if they liked it and confirmed it or they'd make adjustments, and then that's what went on to the shoot.

Post: Has anybody come up to you and recognized you from the shoot?

Mohn: One person. My barber here, and the funny thing is he actually cut my hair like a week and a half before I left for the shoot because I needed to cut it, and then when I got my hair cut a couple of weeks ago he said, 'Didn't I see you in Playboy?' and I said 'Yep, you actually cut my hair right before the shoot.' That's his crafting there.
