Athens City Council members approved a 6 percent increase in monthly sewer rates that will begin in December at last night's meeting.
The increase will provide funding to help maintain the aging sewer system, make a required pump station upgrade and help enforce the Clean Water Act, said Councilwoman Nancy Bain, D-3rd Ward. The city made more than $2 million in upgrades to the sewer system to comply with Environmental Protection Agency regulations that changed two years ago.
The increase would generate about $156,000 annually, said Service-Safety Director Ray Hazlett, and will also cover operation employees' salaries, particularly for overtime.-
