Football: New faces brighten Ohio performance

Ohio's defense had its best performance of the season against Temple Friday, and a big part of that was the play of defensive end Conor Reilly.

Reilly, who started his third game in a row in place of Kris Luchsinger, followed up a solid game against Bowling Green with a career day against Temple. The sophomore had career-highs in total tackles (five), sacks (one) and tackles for loss (two).

So far in college

I think it's the best game I've played Reilly said. It's the most complete game I've had G? they gave me good opportunities.

Reilly is just one of a couple of new faces to pop up and help a defensive unit that had struggled. Linebacker Lee Renfro, who had eight total tackles against the Owls, has performed well since taking over for senior Jordan Meyers, and backup linebacker Noah Keller and cornerback Idris Lawerence have done well in spot duty.

The inexperienced players have started to gel with one another at a crucial time.

We always knew we were a good defensive group Reilly said. We just got to keep going

keep it moving.High praiseA week after being named Mid-American Conference Special Teams Player of the Week, running back Vince Davidson got his first taste of what he was brought in to do.

Davidson got his first opportunity to carry the ball against Toledo, rushing six times for 47 yards and his first career touchdown. He added the first catch of his career for 30 yards.

Vince is going to be a good running back for us

running back Kalvin McRae said. Vince did a good job coming and giving us a lift.

Davidson is one of two freshman running backs to carry the ball for Ohio this season. Freshman Donte Harden had five rushes for 26 yards against Louisiana-Lafayette earlier this season. Harden has since had surgery and is out for the season.

We've got a couple of very good freshman running backs

and I think the future's bright

where that's concerned

coach Frank Solich said. Braunstein a duck?Since converting his 20th straight field goal attempt Oct. 20 at Toledo, kicker Michael Braunstein has been uncharacteristically inaccurate.

Braunstein has missed three of his last seven field goals, including two against Temple. Solich said that he didn't hesitate to put his kicker back out there in a field goal situation and a lot of that has to do with his personality.

He's going to be able to shrug that off

Solich said. It just runs off his back like water running off a duck's back.

Braunstein's second field goal against Temple was his school-record 16th field goal on the season.Back in actionQuarterback Theo Scott had to leave early in the third quarter with a pulled groin and did not return.

On Sunday, Scott could be seen jumping over railings and Solich confirmed that Scott should be able to play on Wednesday against Akron.

We have some guys that are questionable

but from the team we put on the field last week

there's just no one that can be ruled out at this point
