City council gears up to meet challenges in 2008

The Athens City Council president outlined committee members' 2008 goals at the first meeting of the year.

Council President Bill Bias charged the arts and recreation committee, chaired by Kent Butler, D-1st Ward, to find a new location for the Athens Farmers Market, to improve funding for the Athens Community Center, and to continue operating ARTS/West Performing Arts Facility.

Goals for the safety committee, chaired by Sherry Coon, D-2nd Ward, include inspecting and improving carbon dioxide alarms in Athens residences and funding new equipment for the Athens Fire Department.

Bias asked the utilities committee, chaired by Nancy Bain, D-3rd Ward, to address the economically challenged sewer system and decrease litter.

The planning and development committee, chaired by Debbie Phillips, D-4th Ward, was charged to create a comprehensive plan for building new structures, define intelligent city development by outlining requirements for new Athens tenants and review zoning ordinances.
