African hero to be honored for Black History Month

For an event that that offers something different from other programming during Black History Month, the African Student Union is encouraging people to come to its African Heroes Night.

The annual event honors an individual that has made a contribution to the continent of Africa, said Gcina Mavimbela, president of ASU.

Dora Nkem Akunyili, director-general of Nigeria's National Agency for Food and Drug Control, will be honored for her role in better regulating the safety of drugs and the transport of banned or restricted chemicals.

(Heroes Night) adds flavor to the weekend

and it lets us focus on one person to end the week said Mavimbela.

Honoring Akunyili also allows for equal gender representation because it follows the commemoratives for Malcolm X and Bob Marley, said Nneka Agwuegbo, the outgoing growth and community outreach coordinator for ASU.

Although Akunyili is unable to attend the event because of a scheduling conflict, a representative of the Nigerian consulate in New York will accept the honor on her behalf. -
