Area officials donate to prosecutor race

Athens County Democratic Party Chair Susan Gwinn raised around $4,000 more than her opponent in the race for county prosecutor and spent nearly two times as much, according to campaign finance filings due yesterday.

Gwinn, who had $20,215 available, spent $15,695.71, while incumbent Prosecutor C. David Warren spent $7,986.16 of the $16,130.35 he raised.

After expenditures, Gwinn has $4,519.29 on hand, and Warren has $8,144.19 on hand with a $1,403.76 debt.

Gwinn's total funds available include a $5,000 contribution from Gwinn herself, along with over 40 other contributions and a fundraiser. Gwinn received a $100 contribution from Athens City Councilwoman Amy Flowers, D-at large, as well as fundraiser donations from other city and county officials.

At her fundraiser, Gwinn received donations from former Mayor Ric Abel ($150), County Commissioner candidate Douglas Davis ($50), County Recorder Jessica Markins ($25), Athens City Auditor Kathy Hecht ($100), Coroner candidate Harold Clay Thompson ($100) and Board of Elections Chairman William Lavelle ($250).

Both Gwinn and Warren received $100 donations from County Commissioner Lenny Eliason.

Warren received 14 contributions and held two fundraisers. Among the contributions were Ohio Democratic Party Chair Chris Redfern's donation of $1,000 and the Pat Lang for Law Director Committee's donation of $500.

Warren's fundraiser on Feb. 8 made $7,315 and his second fundraiser on Feb. 12 made $1,070. At his fundraisers, Warren received contributions from local entrepreneur Brent Hayes ($100), Friends of Dean DePiero ($150) and Citizens to Elect Dan Dodd ($150).

DePiero is the current mayor of Parma, Ohio, and Dodd is the state representative for the 91st district.

Gwinn and Warren could not be reached for comment.

Democrat Pat Kelly, who is challenging incumbent Vernon Castle, had about $1,000 more funds available than Castle.

Kelly had $5,853.78 available from 19 contributors and spent $1,093.01.

Castle received $4,607.27 from 8 contributors and a $1,000 loan. Castle's contributions included a $2,000 donation from Neighbors United for a Better Athens. Castle's expenditures were more than twice Kelly's, totaling $2,647.20.

Stephen Kane, the only Republican candidate for sheriff, received 3 contributions totaling $300. His available funds were $1,631.26 and expenditures were $109.76.

County Commissioners race

Only four of the 10 county commissioner candidates filed finance reports. They were Democrats Bob Baughman, Doug Davis and Aliene Linwood and Republican Larry Payne.

Baughman, who was not required to file, spent and made $0.

Davis received 18 contributions and held a fundraiser that earned $1,648.99.

He had $3,879.51 available and spent $955.60.
