Just as the band Sum 41 chose their name because they became a band on the forty-first day of summer, October Fist chose their name because they started in October.
I always liked the way it sounded
like the fist represented the strength of the music said Brian Wenner, guitarist. Plus that's the last good band name it was the only one not taken
Wenner said.
With a name in place, Wenner, along with fellow OU students guitarist Jared Kurzawa, drummer Kyle Truitt, and bassist Zack Gemmell, the band began to focus more on their musical style. The band plays progressive, guitar-heavy, instrumental-only songs similar to bands such as Pelican or Isis. Truitt is the only member of the band that admits to listening to technical metal but the band feels their style music came out of necessity.
(We play this music) because we don't have a vocalist
so it would be boring to have three-chord progression songs without any singing
Wenner said.
The band said that they like to sound different than most of the other local Athens bands.
I didn't even listen to metal at all
but I found Skeletonwitch and thought
'Damn
these guys are sweet!' and then I realized they didn't play here that much
so I was bummed about the (music) scene around here
said Kurzawa.
Wenner agreed, saying that their music has helped to fill the void between the Athens bands that play death metal and the indie rock. However, October Fist's music is only in the early stages of being released.
The band has yet to release an album, but they did do a one-take recording of four tracks when they snuck into a TCOM recording studio at midnight the day before they left for winter break this year.
We had the code (to the door)
