Baseball: Ohio kicks off 2008 with 2 victories against CSU

Ohio opened up the 2008 season by winning two out of three games against Charleston Southern.

On Saturday, Ohio pounded the Buccaneers 9-1. Junior Chris Rigo started for the Bobcats, throwing seven innings and giving up one run on one hit with five strikeouts, earning the win. He carried a no-hitter through six and 2/3 innings.

Junior Matt Schlarb finished the game, pitching two shutout innings, allowing only two hits and striking out two.

On offense, the 'Cats were led by a three-for-five, three RBI day by Matt Stiffler, including a three-run home run in the second inning. Freshmen Robert Maddox III and Gauntlett Eldemire also contributed with home runs of their own. Maddox's solo homer, his only hit of the game, came in the third inning, while Eldemire's three-run shot came in the eighth as a pinch hitter. Brandon Besl chipped in with three hits and an RBI, while catcher Chris Klimko added another RBI on two hits.

Because of bad weather on Friday, the Bobcats and Buccaneers played a double-header yesterday, with Ohio taking the first, 6-2, and Charleston Southern winning the second 7-1.

In the first game, Zach Elmer got the start and the win for Ohio. He tossed five innings, allowing one run and striking out four. Joe Stover closed out the game, allowing one run on one hit and whiffing three over four innings.

Besl led the Bobcat offense, going three-for-four with two RBIs. Jeremie Rehak, Marc Krauss, Jerod Yakubik, and Hayden Johnston each had RBIs of their own.

In the third game, Charleston Southern's Andrew White tossed seven and 1/3 innings, giving up one run on three hits.

He also fanned seven Bobcats. Payton Tweddale finished off the game by throwing one and 2/3 innings, holding Ohio to only one hit and no runs. The Bobcats had only four hits the entire game.

For Ohio, Matt Smith earned the loss by giving up two runs through five innings. Jason Moulton allowed five runs on four hits in two and 1/3 innings of work.

What little offense Ohio produced came off the bat of catcher Trace Voshell, who drove in Maddox on a single in the second inning.
