Faced with various hypothetical budget cut scenarios, the student committee tasked with recommending how to spend general fee money repeated its 2007 suggestion in a draft proposal: cut Intercollegiate Athletics' budget the most.
Under the scenario that the general fee budget would be reduced by 3 percent, the Student General Fee Advisory Committee recommended cutting Athletics' the amount the department receives from the General Fee by $250,000.-
the three or the five; most likely the three Diehl said.
The total recommended cut in the 3 percent scenario was about $470,000.
Diehl said the committee took a different approach this year and looked at the budget as a whole instead of focusing on specific units. He said the committee is not looking at using the money from one specific department, such asIntercollegiate Athletics, to fund another unit.
We can't pull all the eggs in one basket
he said. We feel more confidently we learned lessons and incorporated them.
Other units that faced sizeable cuts were Student Senate, which faced a recommended cut of about $3,000, or 10 percent, and The Post, which faced a cut of about $4,000 or a 10 percent.
Will Wemer, treasurer for Student Senate and member of the committee, said this is one of the hardest committees he has ever served on because of the proposed budget cuts that could seriously cripple a unit.
If I could keep everyone on their proposed budgets and also give new units their increases
that would be ideal
he said. In my personal opinion
we were as unbiased as possible
obviously people will differ and that is the hard part about this. It is the matter that there is no money.
