Injuries hamper Bobcats

While injuries might not have been the cause of Ohio's loss to Buffalo on Saturday, they certainly didn't help.

Quintana Ward missed her first start in four seasons with the Bobcats because of a rolled ankle she suffered during shoot-around the morning before the game. She came down on a teammate's foot after attempting a shot.

Ward limited her participation in practice yesterday to give the ankle rest, but she and coach Sylvia Crawley said the ankle should be fine to play tomorrow against Bowling Green.

I've had ankle sprains before

but usually they were a different day so I had a few days to recuperate but since it happened the same day (as a game) it was just really sore Ward said. I definitely will be playing tomorrow.

Chandra Myers was another Bobcat with an injury Saturday. Myers left the game and returned in the second half with a splint and wrap around her left hand. She said that she jammed her thumb during practice on Friday and then caught it on an opponent's jersey during Saturday's game, bending the finger back. Myers said she thinks the thumb is sprained, but she will wear a wrap and small cast for four weeks.

Jackie Hiebert also left Saturday's game with a contusion on her calf muscle. Crawley said that because of the place in Hiebert's muscle where she suffered the bruise, the leg is sore, but by tomorrow, she will receive treatment to loosen it up.

Thia Gholson, who suffered a torn anterior cruciate ligament and a sprained medial collateral ligament in the middle of January, underwent surgery to repair her right knee. Crawley said the surgery was successful and Gholson is undergoing rehabilitation. At best, Gholson should be able to return by November or December, Crawley said.

Dancing queen

One of the most memorable moments from the men's team's BracketBuster game Saturday happened during a first half media time out.

Donned in a white Ohio jersey and waving pompoms, Crawley joined the Ohio dance team and went through an entire routine, keeping pace the entire way. When the song ended, she left the court to a standing ovation.

Crawley said that she is a supporter of the men's team and enjoyed her performance. She said she has participated in halftime shows at other schools where she's coached, but didn't receive the amount of feedback that she has from her most recent dance performance.

It's like the talk of the town

Crawley said. Now it's coach (Tim) O'Shea's turn.

Don't hold your breath.

There's no possibility of me performing here

O'Shea said. Maybe we could get (assistant coach) Bacari (Alexander) out there. Bacari's got some rhythm

and he's a real showman

but not me.

I hope I can see a tape of it, O'Shea continued. She'll do anything for a little recruiting exposure.
