Don't invent a crazy sister to drive people away. That's the moral of the Lost Flamingo Company's Parents' Weekend performance.
The Lost Flamingo Company, Ohio University's only student-run theater troupe, will present John Patrick's light-hearted comedy A Bad Year for Tomatoes Friday and Saturday.
The play follows Myra, a middle-aged television actress, as she settles down in a small town to write her autobiography. To scare off her nosy neighbors, Myra invents a psychotic sister, but the situation escalates as Myra's lie further intrigues her neighbors and captivates the eye of a local handyman.
When director Alina Buccella, a senior English major, first read the comedy, she said she thought it left room for the actors to bring their own jokes to their characters, adding that the cast keeps her laughing at every rehearsal.
You'd think I'd get tired (of rehearsals)
she said, but the cast is constantly throwing in something new at each rehearsal.
LFC picked A Bad Year for Tomatoes because it was so light-hearted.
The play is a nice complement to the LFC's other performances for the quarter, LFC president Christine Sagar said. The company will perform Deathtrap, a thriller, and The Pillowman, a horror show, later this quarter.
We try to offer something for everyone Sagar said.
