Ohio University will host the seventh annual Ohio Latin Americanist Conference for the first time tomorrow.
The statewide event is merging with the annual Spanish Colloquium in OU's Department of Modern Languages.
The modern languages colloquium was started to work with literature
and since then we've branched into anthropology political science and music said Betsy Partyka, director of Latin American Studies. Every year it's gone in a different direction
but there's always a literature element.
An Americanist is someone who specializes in Latin American studies.
More than 80 undergraduate students, graduate students and faculty members will present research papers and take part in panel discussions. Half the presenters are from OU, while the others are from a variety of places such as Texas, Kansas, Kentucky and Brazil.
The Latin Americanist Conference has been held at Ohio State University for the past six years, but most of the presenters at the conference were from OU and it made sense to host it at OU this year, Partyka said, adding that organizers are hoping to attract more walk-in attendees because of the location on campus.
Eliana Rivero, professor of Spanish, women's studies and Latin American studies at the University of Arizona, will deliver the conference's keynote address at 1 p.m. tomorrow at the Ohio University Inn. Rivero will also be speaking at 3 p.m. today at the International Studies Forum in Walter 145.
The conference will conclude with a Latin dance in Walter Rotunda at 8 p.m. Cover is $3 and music will be provided by Latin Jazz, a group of 10 musicians from across Ohio.
