Shouts and Murmurs: 'Post' columnist chooses his favorites for the Academy Awards

Post columnist Ethan Goldsmith gives his picks for Sunday's Oscars.

Best Picture

In this category there are three legitimately great movies (Atonement, Juno, No Country), one strong actor movie (Michael Clayton), and one Yosemite Sam cartoon (There Will Be Blood). But I think that No Country is the only film that we will still be talking about thirty years from now, and I think the Academy knows this.

Should/Will Win: No Country for Old Men

Best Director

In my mind the best director and the best film should always match; plus the Coen brothers have been doing so much great work through the past twenty years that I think it's time they're given their due. However, credits should also be given to the beautiful work by Julian Schnabel.

Should Win: The Coen brothers or Schnabel

Will Win: The Coen Brothers

Best Actor

Nothing would make me happier than to see Daniel Day-Lewis lose for his overpraised work in There Will Be Blood, but his win seems to be inevitable. Fortunately, the other great performances were by actors who still have a lot of time (Depp, Mortensen, Clooney). They'll win soon enough.

Should Win: Johnny Depp

Will Win: Daniel Day-Lewis

Best Actress

When the legendary Julie Christie plays an Alzheimer's patient, the Oscar race pretty much ends there. However, there's still a chance for a dark horse victory for Juno's Ellen Page, the breakout performance of the year.

Should Win: Ellen Page

Will Win: Julie Christie

Best Supporting Actor

All of the performances deserve to win, but Javier Bardem's already legendary performance as the killer Chigurh is in a class of its own. Casey Affleck, while giving one of the best performances of the year, has more of a leading role, and would have been my favorite in that category had he been in it.

Should/Will Win: Javier Bardem

Best Supporting Actress

The race is pretty tight between Amy Ryan's drug-addict mother and Cate Blanchett's Bob Dylan, and while both of these performances are great, I'd give the slight edge to Ryan, since I don't think the Academy would give the award to Blanchett this soon since her past win in 2005.

Should Win: Cate Blanchett

Will Win: Amy Ryan
