Softball: Team 'out to prove people wrong' after MAC prediction

The Bobcats are coming into the season with some confidence and a bit of a chip on their shoulder. After finishing third last season in the Mid-American East Division, the Bobcats are projected to come in fourth this year.

We're out to prove people wrong this year

senior infielder Alicia Catlette said. We've got a lot to prove. With that, however, comes an air of confidence.

We played some good games in the fall and we knew we had a bunch of good freshmen coming in so we're pretty confident Catlette said.

One of the selling points for the Bobcats is the team's cohesion. This year's team features six seniors, including Catlette ' a first-team All-MAC selection last year, and Courtney Waters ' a second-team All-MAC choice in 2007.

Our seniors are very good role models for us. They're very good leaders and their leadership is very important

freshman pitcher/first baseman Emily Wethington said.

The seniors know what's expected of them and they set the tone for what they expect from themselves

third-year coach Jill Matyuch said. I really like our senior leadership.

In addition to the senior class, the Bobcats feature plenty of underclassmen they are counting on to contribute G

Catlette said. We have probably the most cohesive group of seniors and we mix well with the underclassmen.

Matyuch has confidence in her young players.

We expected them to make an impact

and we continue to expect that they'll make an impact G

she said.

Based on their depth, Matyuch expects success.

We're probably as well-rounded as we've been since I've been here

Matyuch said.

The weather certainly provides an obstacle for the Bobcats as the season kicks off, but Matyuch is expecting some good things as well.

The weather hasn't been real cooperative but we've been having really good practices indoor and in the batting cages

so I'm real optimistic

Matyuch said.

In the batting cages, Catlette has noticed a promising trend.

Our hitting has probably been the best I've seen in four years
