Despite bouncing back from a disappointing week in Bowling Green at the All-Ohio Championships, the Ohio track and field team will have to regroup and get ready for a return trip to Akron.
The Zips Invitational is the final meet before the Mid-American Conference Championships, held next weekend in Ypsilanti, Mich.
We'll use it as a tune-up meet
looking to post some good times coach Clay Calkins said. It's a good way to get mentally and physically prepared for the MAC Championships.
At the Akron Open earlier this month, several Bobcats set personal- and school-best records in various events. Their solid finish was fueled by a first-place finish the previous weekend in Columbus at the Capital Invitational.
Calkins hopes that last week's strong finish will bring better results this weekend, not unlike what happened from the Columbus meet to Akron.
Coming off the All-Ohio we're hanging in there with Toledo and Bowling Green
Calkins said. It's good to see where you stand
and where we are right now generates some positive momentum going into next week.
After the Bobcats finished sixth at the All-Ohio Championships, Calkins noted that the improving performance of the shot putters would be a key to success at the conference championships.
Bahiyjaui Allen and Emily Amendola have been mainstays for Ohio all season, with Allen taking second place last weekend.
Amendola has five top-two finishes in the shot put in six meets this season.
MAC rival Miami won the All-Ohio Championships. Don't think for a second the OU-Miami rivalry is reserved for the pigskin and the hardcourt.
(Miami has) a strong team this year
no doubt about it
Calkins said. They're on fire. We want to compete well against them this week and in the MAC Championships.
