Dailey takes nomination

Knox County farmer Fred Dailey won the Republican nomination in last night's primary for the 18th Congressional District, outrunning his closest opponent by almost 5,000 votes.

The former director of the Ohio Department of Agriculture, who is a Mt. Vernon native and raises cattle on his family's farm, won with 292 votes in Athens County ' not including provisional and absentee ballots. He will challenge incumbent Democrat Zack Space in November.

With about 91 percent of the state reporting, Dailey had 23,165 votes, according to the Web site for the Secretary of State. Jeanette Moll, the next closest candidate, had 18,296 votes at that time.

It was rewarding to have so many people come out and support me

Dailey said. This part was a cake walk; it's the fall election that's going to be the hard part.

The Republicans had three other candidates competing against Dailey for the 18th District spot: Moll with 193 votes in Athens, Paul Phillips took 95 votes and Beau Bromberg with 29 votes. Statewide, Phillips took 13,227 votes, and Bromberg took 4,515 votes.

Dailey's opponents all said they would support him when he faces the incumbent Space in November.

Fred will be a great candidate Phillips said. As long as he stays with his message of job creation creating smaller government

ending illegal immigration and ethical leadership.

Dailey also is an anti-abortion and pro-Second Amendment candidate.

Dailey said he was prepared for anything to happen, but his wife and daughter were anxious as they waited for the results with friends at The Alcove Restaurant in Knox County.

They are high-quality candidates and did an outstanding job

Dailey said. I think highly of all of them

and I will be a better candidate as a result of my campaign in the primary.

Between now and November, Dailey said he has a lot to do to prepare to take on Space.

I have to work hard

he said. I have to travel throughout the district and listen to the people.

The work just begins now

Dailey said. I'm not really celebrating.
