Golf: 'Cats get a 'good start' despite dropping match

Many of golf's greats have won on the hallowed grounds of Pinehurst. Unfortunately, the Bobcats couldn't add their names to the list.

Ohio dropped a rare head-to-head match with Campbell on Friday at the renowned golf resort, 361-383. But within the loss were significant improvements.

An encouraging sign for coach Bob Cooley was the play of sophomores Chad Warmbein and Tim Gusweiler. Both shot 3-over 75 to lead the Bobcats, and were joined at 75 by senior Mark Phillips. Warmbein also led Ohio after two rounds at the Palmas Del Mar Intercollegiate earlier this month, following an opening-round 80 with a 1-over 73.

We showed up and had to play on aerified greens

which was a challenge on a strange course Cooley said. (Warmbein) and (Gusweiler) played very well especially having not seen the course before.

Six of seven Bobcats carded sub-80 rounds at Pinehurst, boding well for the immediate future as the volume of tournaments begin to pick up. Ohio is on the road for the next three events, and they will travel to West Virginia, Kentucky and Pennsylvania before returning to Ohio for the First Energy Invitational in Ravenna.

Cooley said that he will use the best scores from Pinehurst to determine who plays in this weekend's tournament at Marshall.

Despite losing the match, Cooley said that his team will only get better with more rounds under the belt.

Obviously

the more you play

the more consistent you become

he said. Our younger kids need more experience

but this trip was a good start.
