Greek life represented, active in Senate despite accusations

As the commissioner for University Life, I've heard my share of misconceptions about what exactly the University Life commission does. We are organized to address matters that concern the student body as a whole, including greek life issues. The current composition of the commission consists of a commissioner, a vice-commissioner, five at-large senators, one greek life senator and four interns. Half of the commission is involved with a fraternity/sorority. After reading Friday's column about the lack of greek life representation on Senate, I was incredibly disappointed.

Under the Ohio University Student Senate constitution, part of the University Life commission's task is to address greek issues by the greek life senator. This school year, our current greek life senator has gone above and beyond. Working closely with NPHC, IFC and the WPA, he has addressed concerns each organization has had by attending each group's weekly meeting. Fall Quarter, a panel was held to bridge the gap between LGBT and greek students, and another similar event is planned for the spring. He has also worked to get greek life involvement on various senate projects such as Athens Beautification Day and Diversity Awareness Month.

Any fraternity/sorority member is always urged to bring their concerns to the greek life senator, which are often voiced to me at our weekly commission meeting (if and when they arise). The commission as a whole is quick to address any issue, and will do what it takes to get any student's voice heard.
