OU hires VP for research, graduate college dean

Ohio University, which will establish a graduate college in the fall, hired its dean last week.

Rathindra Bose, who will make a $215,000 salary, was named vice president for Research and Creative Activity and dean of the Graduate College. In addition to directing the new college, he will oversee research and work to expand external funding for faculty and students' work. Bose currently holds a similar position at Northern Illinois University.

A search committee selected Bose from a pool of four finalists based on interactions with the committee members and through open forums. Each candidate met with the graduate students on the committee to get an idea of what the students wanted.

If you take a look at his resume and interact with him

Bose is charismatic and feels really passionately about research and about graduate students said graduate student Alyssa Thomas, a member of the search committee. He's not just concerned about graduate education in the traditional sense he's trying to put Ohio University on the map.

One of Bose's goals for the position is to create a graduate college that serves both faculty and students and that serves the graduate population from admission to graduation, he said.

One of the things that prompted him to accept the position was the affability of Ohio University and its students and faculty, Bose said.

When I went in for the interview

my experience was so wonderful

he said. I was delighted with the cordiality I was shown

he said, adding that something else that attracted him was OU's outstanding programs

especially the College of Osteopathic Medicine.

Bose will take over for James Rankin, interim vice president for Research, on July 1.
