Space handily wins Democratic-

Incumbent Congressman Zack Space will once again be the Democratic candidate vying for the 18th District's seat in the U.S. House of Representatives.

With almost 91 percent of precincts reporting, incumbent 18th District Representative Space had collected 85,006 votes, compared to challenger Mark Pitrone's 15,379 votes. Space will face Republican Fred Dailey in November.

In Athens County, Space collected 3,087 votes compared to Pitrone's 704.

The 18th congressional district encompasses a 16-county area in Southeast Ohio, including four townships in the northwest part of Athens County.

Space, whose hometown is Dover, has spent his entire life living in 18th District. He said before the election he wants to improve access to technology, enhance the educational environment in Southeast Ohio and maintain good relations with veterans. Space did not return phone calls late last night.

Space also said before the election that he wants to make college education more affordable and will push for universal access to broadband networks to improve technology on college campuses.

Pitrone, a carpenter from Gnadenhutten with no political background, said he ran to stop career politicians and lawyers from becoming the only elected officials, and he wanted to bring government back to Southeast Ohio.

I'm ecstatic that I received that many votes

he said.- and I'm not giving up until the last vote is counted.

Spending more time and money on his campaign would have helped win more votes, Pitrone said. He said he only spent about 40 hours campaigning in addition to paying the $85 entry fee.

I didn't have to do anything and that should make Space worried

Pitrone said.
