Student charged after swiping city dump truck

Athens City Police officers charged a Hocking College student with several felonies for stealing a city dump truck early yesterday morning and crashing it into an Ohio University fence.

Travis Gigax, 24, of Athens, was charged with felony vandalism, grand theft and felony breaking and entering early yesterday morning.

Police were called at about 3 a.m. yesterday to the Athens Garden Apartments, 300 W. State St., for an attempted break-in, according to a news release. Gigax had been kicking on doors, APD Lt. Ralph Harvey said.

Police found the truck from the West State Street-

according to the release.

Gigax then fled toward the city water and sewer service buildings on Curran Drive. Officers found him in the driver's seat of another city vehicle, a bucket truck, with the engine running, according to the report.
