Student Senate censures VP

Student Senate voted last night to publicly censure Vice President Amanda Roder and to put her on probation after her impeachment two weeks ago.

Roder's probation will last for the remainder of the year; any violations of senate rules during that time will result in Roder being charged with gross and willful neglect of duty. According to the resolution, the senate will recommend to its Committee on Conduct and Discipline that Roder be removed from office in that situation.

Senate President Tim Vonville will deliver the censure, including the charges against Roder and the consequences, at next week's meeting. According to the resolution, the senate will also recommend to its standing committee on Senators Emeritus that she not be eligible to receive that honor.

The resolution regarding Roder's punishment needed to be approved by two-thirds of the voting members present, which last night meant 26 votes. It received 34 yeas, two nays, and three abstentions, said Tristan Walker, chairman of the Committee on Conduct and Discipline.

Roder was impeached two weeks ago on two of five charges brought against her. She was found guilty of not making necessary material available to senators and failing to conduct quarterly evaluations. At that time, she was not found guilty of gross and willful neglect of duty, which would have resulted in her immediate removal from office.

Roder declined to comment on whether she thought her sanction was a fair one.

I would really like senate to focus on the future and moving past this

she said.

Vonville, Walker and Off-Campus Life Commissioner Stefanie Skaggs also voiced their desire to move on from the impeachment.

This finally gives Senate a foothold to move forward Vonville said.

The senate also passed a resolution endorsing the proposed implementation of an optional student health fee to help pay for upgrades to Student Health Services. The resolution was drafted in response to a request from Vice President of Student Affairs Kent Smith.

We are really in dire need of some improvements Residence Life Commissioner Lee Robbins said. This is only going to benefit students in a very tangible way.

Beginning Fall Quarter 2008, Hudson Health Center will charge students' private insurers for office visits. Students who pay the optional $40-per-quarter health fee would be exempt from a $15 co-payment per visit. Changes in Student Health Services were prompted by a report from Keeling & Associates that recommended updated facilities and more staff, among other things.

South Green Senator Chauncey Jackson also spoke in support of the resolution.

I think this shows Student Affairs' and Ohio University's commitment to students

he said. It will go a long way toward improving the services at Hudson.
