Volleyball: Former Gators assistant named Ohio's new coach

A newborn baby was not about to stop Florida assistant coach Ryan Theis from what he saw as a promising head coaching opportunity.

Theis, whose wife recently had a child, was named the 11th Bobcats head volleyball coach today.

He's committed

athletic director Kirby Hocutt said. He and his wife had a new baby boy and three days later Ohio University called him back and said 'Can we get you back on campus?' and 'Can you leave in three hours?'

And with a new baby son just three days old, he got back on the plane.

Theis has coached at the Division I level for eight seasons including the last two at Florida. Before serving as an assistant with the Gators

the Madison

Wisc.

native also served as an assistant at Northwestern

Indiana and Eastern Illinois.

In his two years in Gainesville

Theis helped bring in two recruiting classes rated in the top 10 in the country

including a 2008 class that is considered one of the best in the nation.

As an assistant at Florida

the Gators posted a 59-6 record over the past two seasons

advancing to the Sweet 16 each year in the NCAA Tournament.

My goal has always been to come back to the Midwest, and, quite honestly, I've been trying to kick Geoff (Carlston) out the door the last two years so that I could try to apply for it, Theis said. My wife and I did not really have plans for looking for any head coaching opportunities this year and we felt this was too good to let pass by.

Theis replaces the Bobcats' former coach
