In the U.S. Congress, the House and Senate have passed different versions of the new FISA legislation. The president and his Republican allies are using this opportunity to pressure Congress to grant retroactive immunity to AT&T and Verizon for illegally wiretapping American citizens. I wish I could believe they were only interested in terrorists. But ever since Watergate, we know that many in government are mostly interested in tracking citizens who disagree with the president's policies. Remember, the Watergate break-in was at the office of the Democratic National Committee in the midst of the 1972 presidential campaign.
Does anybody think that the current administration is motivated by higher principles than Richard Nixon's?
