Assistant Managing Editor's Note

Here at The Post, several reporters pride themselves on being able to get the dirt on Ohio University administrators or Athens city officials. They get a rush when they're able to write about budget deficits, presidential evaluations or the failures of Baker University Center. They like to file records requests and sort through documents that back up or even contradict their human sources.

I'm not one of those reporters. Do I see the value of their work? Without a doubt. But I also see value in the stories that don't always make the front page, the stories that aren't breaking news.

It's these stories that can show us new perspectives and introduce us to different ways of living life. They can broaden our outlook and make us realize that among all the self-serving or powerful people out there, there are just as many others who work hard to contribute something to the world we all share, and they do so daily without recognition.

That's the motivation behind a series The Post will run later this quarter. In this series, reporters will profile outstanding undergraduate students from the spheres of sports, city, campus and culture. We have some nominees from staffers, college deans and faculty, but to make sure we feature the best variety of students possible, we need more.

Do you have a neighbor, friend, roommate or classmate who is fascinating, influential or otherwise outstanding? Are you yourself one of those people? We're not necessarily looking for people who have long lists of scholarships or who have done a lot of volunteer work ' they just have to have set themselves apart in some way.

When we ran this series last year, we featured a comic book artist, student political activists and a music therapy student who helped children with autism. We hope to have a similarly diverse mix this year, but we can't do it without your help.

Please send an e-mail to bf286104@ohiou.edu with nominations. Put Post series in the subject line and be sure to include your nominee's name, class year, major, any contact information you have for him or her and reasons why he or she deserves to be recognized.

The deadline for nominations is May 9.-
