With the Toledo defense resembling something out of a baseball bloopers video, the Ohio offense took advantage with an offensive explosion yesterday.
The Rockets committed seven errors and the Bobcats did not let the extra opportunities slip away, pounding Toledo 17-7 to take the rubber match of the three-game series.
The way we play sometimes
we have to take advantage of anybody's errors coach Joe Carbone said. We've done that before so we can empathize with it. But we'll take it.
After the Bobcats' bats were stymied in the opener of the series Saturday, the Ohio hitters wreaked havoc on the Rockets' pitching staff, totaling a combined 35 runs and 36 hits in the two victories.
We did a better job being tougher with two strikes Carbone said. It's something we've been trying to get our guys to do all year and these two games they did a good job of it.
Ohio had seven players record multi-hit games, including catcher Chris Klimko and leftfielder Gauntlett Eldemire, who paced the Bobcats with three hits apiece.
First baseman Robert Maddox III also got in on the action, adding two hits and three RBIs, and centerfielder Matt Stiffler pushed his team's record-long hitting streak to 22 games with two hits and three runs scored. -
but I thought both of those guys stayed within themselves and played pretty well
he said. They had a big following up there
so it was good.
Following a 9-4 defeat in the opener of a doubleheader Saturday, the Bobcats took advantage of suspect Toledo fielding, scoring 11 unearned runs in an 18-5 victory.
In his fifth start of the season, freshman catcher Trace Voshell delivered with three hits and two RBIs, and Brandon Besl added three hits and four RBIs in his second game back from an injured wrist.
Starter Zach Elmer continued his prowess on the mound for Ohio, allowing two runs (one earned) on two hits in six and 1/3 innings.
Ohio (15-12), off to a 7-2 start in Mid American Conference play, is positioning itself to remain in contention in the MAC East after totaling just eight victories in conference play a year ago.
You win two out of three on the road
that's a good weekend
Carbone said.
