Expert talks sports, equality at The Convo

An international expert on racial inequality and sports will be speaking at 7 tonight in the Convocation Center.

Richard Lapchick is the chairman of the DeVos Sport Business Management and the Institute of Diversity and Ethics at the University of Central Florida, in addition to being a regular columnist for The Business Journal and ESPN.com. The title of his speech is Sports: A Bridge Across the Racial Divide.

He's worked for racial and gender equality. Sports is a great leveling field because you're all equal during the game

but ironically sports can also be used to promote racial stereotypes said David Ridpath, assistant professor of sports administration in the School of Recreation and Sport Sciences.

Lapchick is known as a civil rights activist who not only promoted equality when he coached, but has created programs that monitor gender and minority inequalities in hiring practices in the NCAA, Ridpath said.

It's phenomenal to get a man of this stature to come to Ohio University especially during April

which is diversity month. He truly believes in equality and has been threatened and beat-up for those views

he said.

he Athletic Department, Multicultural Programming, the Office of the Provost and the Office of Institutional Equity and University College are sponsoring Lapchick's speech.

We're expecting a good crowd; a lot of organizations are involved with this program

said Kristin Toth, media spokesperson for the event.

This event is free and open to the public.
