Football: No need to play catch-up

The Bobcats may have been forced to push back the start of their spring practice, but they wasted no time getting back into form.

Coach Frank Solich had to move the start of spring practice from Monday to yesterday because he had to interview candidates for the Athletic Director position.

I thought we got off to a pretty good start

Solich said. The enthusiasm was really good.

It's one down, and you only get 15, so you have to make them all count.

The practice the Bobcats missed is tentatively rescheduled for April 28 the Monday after the Green and White game but Solich said they are still looking at alternative dates.

I'm presuming we're going to do that, Solich said. But coaches are allowed to be out there recruiting and some of them are itching to get some recruiting in or asking to get that final practice in ahead of time.

Ohio

which is coming off a fourth-place finish in the Mid-American Conference East Division

opens spring with plenty of questions that need to be answered.

The Bobcats lost the leading rusher in school history

Kalvin McRae

and other important veterans.

A couple of those veterans were in attendance for the Bobcats' first practice. McRae

Landon Cohen

Todd Koenig and Matt Miller were a few of the former players there to see who was going to step into their starting roles.

The quarterback position is one of those holes that needs to be filled. Newcomer Boo Jackson will be pushing Theo Scott

who is coming into his second season at Ohio.

Scott started spring practice with the first-team and said that there are some things that the team needs to iron out.

I think it went all right, Scott said. We're still getting into the rhythm of things. It's more of the little things, mental and staying focused.

Junior college transfers Corey Moncrief (DT)

Patrick Tafua (S) and Jackson went through their first practice as Bobcats. Safety Hilton Dawson III was held out of practice but watched from the sidelines.

They're really good players, Solich said. Hilton needs to take care of something today G? we hope to have him (Friday.)

Quarterback Josh Febus and linebacker Jordan Meyers were held out of practice as they are both recovering from surgery. Meyers will not practice this spring and Febus will be reevaluated Wednesday. Linebacker Errik Ejike and offensive lineman Gary Schussler did not dress.
