The more Theo Scott plays, the more it looks like the quarterback derby is turning into a one-horse race.
In the Bobcats' first scrimmage of the spring, Scott was 6-of-7 passing for 51 yards, including a beautiful 17-yard touchdown pass to tight end David Carter in the corner of the end zone. He also had two rushes for 20 yards
Afterward, Scott was quick to deflect attention to his teammates.
I felt all right
Scott said. We got a lot more athletes on offense right now.
It's simple get them the ball and let the athletes do it.
Junior college transfer Boo Jackson was also impressive, going 4-of-5 passing for 38 yards and a touchdown. Backups Brandon Jones, 5-of-8 for 86 yards and a touchdown, and Brian Sweeney, 4-of-5 for 21 yards and an interception, also performed well.
Ohio's offense scored touchdowns on its first three possessions and coach Frank Solich said he was pleased with how his offense ' especially when Scott was in ' performed.
I thought we threw the ball well Solich said. (We) made some excellent catches and were able to keep drives alive. (Scott) is obviously showing a great deal of leadership and executing the offense very, very well. ... He's putting all of the pieces of the puzzle together.
While the quarterback competition seems to be clearing up a bit
the same can't be said about the running back position.
All four running backs performed well in their first live action of the spring. Sophomore Vince Davidson had six carries for 58 yards and a touchdown. Junior Chris Garrett was solid throughout the scrimmage
carrying the ball six times for 33 yards. Junior L.J. Flintall had eight carries for 16 yards
while redshirt freshman Donte Harden finished with five carries for 14 yards
including a 1-yard touchdown.
Davidson
though
had the biggest run of the day
a 39-yard burst that set-up Scott's touchdown throw.
I felt good, Davidson said. I could be that playmaker, that one play guy that could take it to the house every time.
Solich said that it's too early to tell how these position battles are going to turn out.
(It) hasn't really been enough to separate the I-backs at all or the quarterbacks really, he said.
The offense turned the ball over just twice in the game. Sweeney threw the only interception of the day to linebacker Anton Robinson
and even that was a ball that should have been caught by the receiver. Sweeney also fumbled a snap from center.
