Peden Stadium is starting to look like more of a hospital ward than a football field these days.
Just two weeks into spring practice, players are dropping left and right with various injuries, and coach Frank Solich believes that it might have something to do with how the team is practicing.
It's starting to mount on us a little bit
Solich said. What we've been doing is having two team stations for each teamwork period and the good thing about that is everyone gets a lot of reps. The tough thing about it is that when you start to get guys banged up then
obviously
there are some positions where guys are starting to get too many reps.
Fallen Bobcats
Junior offensive lineman Dathan Ferrainolo (neck) has been medically disqualified from continuing his football career.
Junior defensive end Kris Luchsinger (shoulder) will be held out of contact drills for the remainder of spring.
Sophomore defensive tackle Marcellis Williamson is out for the next two to three weeks with a partially torn MCL.
Senior linebacker Jordan Meyers (neck and shoulder) is being shut down for spring.
Sophomore Noah Keller is going to be held out for the majority of spring after aggravating a hamstring injury that he originally hurt during winter workouts.
Junior quarterback Josh Febus and senior linebacker Errik Ejike have yet to dress in practice.
Freshman tight end Zac Clark (knee) needs surgery and is likely done for the spring after a big hit by junior walk-on safety Scott Starkey.
Junior walk-on wide receiver Chris Miller, who transferred from Air Force, has left the team.
Wide receiver Matt Lawson and offensive lineman Brady Pizzano graduated with a year of eligibility left and will not return to the team.
Walk-on wide receiver Ted Keller quit the team on Monday.
Who's the boss?
Solich, who was one of the four coaches on the athletic director search committee, said that he was pleased with the hiring of former Wichita State Athletic Director Jim Schaus.
Schaus had great success in the Missouri Valley Conference while he was with Wichita State. The Shockers have won 20 conference titles and four straight all-sports trophies in Schaus' nine years with the school.
The one thing that Schaus didn't have was a football team, but that doesn't worry Solich.
I'm sure he knows what football is about
Solich said with a grin. He has had success at Wichita State and has been able to do a lot of things there and he's been a good fundraiser
which is something every Mid-American Conference school needs.
A case of 'fumbilitis'
After working out of the shotgun for two years at El Camino Junior College, junior quarterback Boo Jackson is having a little bit of trouble taking the snap from center.
Jackson has fumbled the snap on multiple occasions during practice or hasn't gotten a clean snap away, and Solich said that it is something a lot of young quarterbacks do and that he is not worried about it quite yet.
I would expect as we go through more practices that it will continue to improve
Solich said.
