Goodwill store approved for East State Street

A Goodwill store will open on East State Street before May 1 and employ about six to seven people, the company's CEO estimated.

Code Enforcement Director Steve Pierson approved the store's zoning permit yesterday.

The store will be next to the U.S. Social Security Administration building in the Athens Center on East State Street, said Keith Alcorn, CEO of Goodwill Industries of South Central Ohio, Inc.

Even though each Goodwill store typically sells items donated at that location, stores also share merchandise. The Athens store will receive donations from other locations initially to build up its inventory.

Our stores aren't like most thrift stores. They're like a miniature department store with bright

clean aisles Alcorn said.

Alcorn also said he expects year-round residents and students alike to be interested in the store's merchandise, adding that the store may be a little more trendy because of the large student population in Athens.

The Athens store will also have a workforce office, which provides job and family services, Alcorn said, adding that the office will be funded by store profits.
