Honors Tutorial College finds alternative presence on Mill Street for seniors

An Athens family recently offered Honors Tutorial College students their house on Mill Street.

Bob and Trisha Lachman, who have a daughter currently in the college, offered their house at 156 Mill St. to students in the college to lease starting in 2009.

Seven Honors Tutorial College seniors will live in the house while they work on a college-required thesis. Jan Hodson, assistant dean of the college, said the Lachmans wanted to find responsible people to live in the house after they move.

Their daughter Mary is a junior and will live in the house next year. The Lachmans' son graduated from the college in 2005.

Hodson said the students will have individual 10-month leases with the Lachmans and will each pay $500 per month, including utilities. The college will not pay anything.

The college was originally looking to buy the fraternity house next to Baker University Center to offer to its seniors, but it was too large, Hodson said. She added that the Lachmans will renovate the house this summer to accommodate its new residents.

They will renovate it keeping in mind that we want the students to eat together and meet with each other

Hodson said.

Bob Lachman said the three-story house is about 2,600 square feet, not including the basement. - Lachman said, adding that he did not want to disclose the number of bedrooms and bathrooms because it could misinform students if the numbers change during renovations.

It would be nice for the neighborhood to have more diversity other than a party focus Lachman said.
