After six years as dean of the Honors Tutorial College, Ann Fidler tearfully announced yesterday she will leave her current position to take up a one-year associate provost job, effective June 30.
Fidler's new title will be interim associate provost for strategic initiatives. She currently makes $95,766 annually. The salary for her new position has not been determined, university media specialist Katie Quaranta said. She did not know when that decision would be made.
An interim dean will be chosen in the next two to three weeks, Fidler said, adding the search for the new dean will begin in the fall.
I truly believe there is somebody out there who can do this job better than I can
she said. Although she said she had the right skill set for her time as dean, she thinks the next dean should be a good fundraiser.
She said the college needs more money to be able to expand its facilities, increase merit awards to students and increase faculty compensation. Faculty who conduct tutorials ' one-on-one or small group classes for HTC students ' are currently paid $330 per student, Fidler said.
Plans to expand the college's house at 35 Park Place to include a kitchen and larger common room were postponed for fiscal reasons this year.
Fidler said she wants the university to do a national search for the new dean.
It will give us the opportunity to find someone really really good she said.
Fidler called her time at the HTC a privilege and praised college students and staff.
It's not really my college
Fidler said. It's something that's bigger and more significant.
Assistant Dean Jan Hodson and HTC staff member Kathy White were also emotional during the meeting.
Kathy and I feel strongly that where this dean has taken us is amazing
Hodson said. She said they are dedicated to ensuring the quality of the college is upheld and enhanced by a new dean.
Near the end of a question-and-answer period, junior Tom Wagener thanked Fidler for her time as dean, sparking a standing ovation.
After her year at the Provost's Office, Fidler said she might return to practicing law.
