Coach Clay Calkins knew it was only a matter of time before his supporting cast came through with a big weekend. What he may not have expected was an express delivery.
Ohio's triple-threat throwers Emily Amendola, Bahiyjaui Allen and Jessie Tanner supplied 53 of the Bobcats' 80 team points over the weekend at the Miami Team Challenge in Oxford, but two season-best unexpected marks set the tone.
Brittany Vinson placed third in the long jump (5.55 meters) and Chanelle Harmon took fifth in the 100-meter dash.
We had some areas with a lot of success
obviously the throwers did a great job Calkins said. As a group (the throwers) were the highlight of the meet.
(Vinson) keeps improving each week ' she's definitely on the right track.
The Bobcats finished fourth in a 14-team field. The host RedHawks were the run-away winners with 212 points
turning the lights out on second-place Bowling Green
who finished with 92 points.
Allen finished first in the discus throw and second in the shot put. Tanner and Amendola took third and fourth-place
respectively
in the discus. Amendola also finished second in the hammer throw.
When you're finishing that high in events, it's obvious you're doing the right things in training, Calkins said. Those things translate to competition.
She may finish in the top-five more often than not
but Allen said the status quo isn't acceptable.
Even though I'm near the top every week, it depends on who's in the field too, Allen said. Some weeks you can win with a certain mark, others you can't.
We only have five more weeks until (the Mid-American Conference Championships)
we have to get better each week.
