On average, 36,500 people are sexually victimized in the workplace each year. Of those victims, 80 percent are female and 20 percent are male. Despite the large number of sexual violence that occurs, only 23 percent of cases are reported to the police. In Athens, some businesses are taking a stand against this violence. Themes, Mountain Laurel's and O'Betty's have stepped up their normal business practices and pledged to work toward ending sexual violence within the workplace and the community.
To show their commitment to creating a community and workplace free of sexual violence, Themes, Mountain Laurel's and O'Betty's will be participating in Shop to End Sexual Violence Day on Saturday, April 19. A portion of their sales that day will go to the Sexual Assault Prevention Program of Tri-County Mental Health and Counseling, whose goal is to educate children, youth and adults about the primary prevention of sexual assault. Let these businesses know you appreciate their efforts and patronize them on Saturday, April 19. The more you patron these businesses that day, the more money will be raised for prevention efforts. Each business will also have a consumer pledge for you to sign, if you choose, that indicates your support for preventing sexual violence.
Lindsey Daniels is the program coordinator for the Sexual Assault Prevention Program.
