Basketball: Junior to transfer to West Coast

Bert Whittington IV has decided to leave the team and university to transfer to a school on the West Coast, coach Tim O'Shea said yesterday.

O'Shea said he had a conversation with the 5-11 junior about his situation and was supportive of Whittington's decision.

Most kids I've recruited have loved Athens

he said, adding that he was thankful for Whittington's contributions to the team last season. I think there's a desire on his part to get back to that part of the country.

Whittington's contributions included 8.0 points per game and 45 assists over the course of the season. O'Shea said he has given Whittington an unconditional release, meaning he can transfer to any school he desires, and added that he thinks Whittington will end up at a solid Division II program.

The departure opens up a new scholarship for the Bobcats. O'Shea said he currently has 12 guys committed for next season, but don't expect the announcement of a new recruit anytime soon.

We're not in an urgent rush to use that scholarship O'Shea said. (The MAC) has a history of finding guys late. We're going to keep our eyes open.

Whittington transferred to Ohio last season from Ohlone junior college in California. He is also the second Bobcat to leave the squad since the conclusion of the 2007-2008 season, joining Allen Hester G
