Board of elections hopes to encourage students to vote in today's campaign

Last spring, about 4,600 students, or 23 percent of the student body, voted in the elections ' the largest turnout in about 20 years. Of the voters, 78 percent indicated they had no confidence in Ohio University President Roderick McDavis and his administration.

Senate Board of Elections Chairman Micah Mitchell said he thought last year's high turnout was-

he said.

About 400 students voted in the 2005 Senate election, in which the AMP party ran unopposed. In 2006, 1,447 students, or 9 percent, voted.

To get students to vote this year, the board of elections created a Facebook event and sent an e-mail to the student body telling them how to vote, Mitchell said. He also said coverage of the election by local newspapers helped inform students about the election.

Hopefully we'll have a good turnout he said.

Despite a possible lower turnout, all three presidential candidates said they thought their campaigns

went well.

Presidential candidate Michael Adeyanju, a senior, said members of his Ability and Accountability (AAA) party have campaigned hard using fliers, T-shirts and buttons.

I think people are excited to vote AAA and excited for our victory Adeyanju said.

Senior Mashur Rahman, presidential candidate for the Action through Communication and Teamwork (ACT) party, said his campaign has been amazing and that his party received a good response from students.

We would be able to stop internal politics in Senate and bring everyone together as a whole

he said.

Junior Will Klatt heads the Birthday Party and encourages students to vote.

I think next year could be exciting

but people are going to have to come out and vote

Klatt said. We're going to have to win

and I think we will.

Students can vote online on any computer from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. today. There will also be a voting center outside Baker University Center. Results will be announced at 8 p.m. on the fourth floor of Baker Center.

Last year, students in four residence halls ' Bromley, Bryan, Voigt and Scott Quad ' experienced voting problems and had to switch to paper ballots. Others were allowed to vote online before the polls were set to open, forcing the board to discard their votes. Mitchell said those problems have been corrected, and the board performed test runs of the system.

This year things should go off without a hitch

he said.
