An Ohio University trustee resigned last month to focus on his new job managing racetracks.
Scott Borgemenke, one of nine voting members of OU's Board of Trustees, resigned on April 18 to spend more time managing racetracks for Magna Entertainment Corp., which operates 10 horse racetracks across the country. Borgemenke's term was to end in 2015.
I just wasn't putting in the personal time that really
really needs to be put in to be a trustee Borgemenke said. I didn't feel I had the time to do it justice.
OU quietly removed Borgemenke's name from the list of trustees on its Web site last week but has not made an official announcement. University Spokeswoman Sally Linder said OU removed Borgemenke's name after he told the board's secretary he planned to resign, adding that OU will announce his departure when Ohio Gov. Ted Strickland confirms his resignation.
Strickland will appoint a new trustee to fill Borgemenke's spot but has no deadline to do so, said Keith Dailey, a spokesman for the governor. Former Gov. Bob Taft announced Borgemenke's appointment to the board in September 2006, along with a slew of other appointments to state boards and commissions. Strickland must also appoint replacements for C. David Snyder and student trustee Lydia Gerthoffer, whose terms expire this year.
OU's board consists of nine voting trustees, two non-voting student trustees and two non-voting national trustees.
Mr. Borgemenke was thorough and diligent as a trustee. We will miss him but understand how personal schedules must take priority Board Chairman C. Daniel DeLawder wrote in an e-mail. We all wish the best for Scott.
Borgemenke left his job as chief of staff for Ohio House Speaker Jon Husted in January to become Magna's executive vice president for racing later that month. He chaired the Ohio State Racing Commission from 2002 to 2004.
Magna lost almost $114 million in 2007 and $87 million in 2006.
