Final 3 dorms vote today for Student Senate

Students in three residence halls will have a second chance to vote for Student Senate candidates today.

The senate Board of Elections said students in Bromley and Voigt Halls and Scott Quadrangle were unable to vote between 8 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. last week.

Although Bryan Hall was originally included in the list of affected dormitories, the Office of Information Technology determined that the hall's residents could vote the entire day, Board Chairman Micah Mitchell wrote in a statement Sunday. Mitchell did not return phone calls.

Chief Information Officer Brice Bible said students had problems because those three residence halls didn't belong to a specific green in the online voting system.

Residents in the same four dormitories had difficulty voting last year for similar reasons, and their votes were not included in the election. Last year was the first time students voted using electronic ballots.

Although voting systems in Bromley, Voigt and Scott Quad were tested with all other residence halls the day before the election this year, Bible said the testing was not complete enough.

It turns out it was not fully done

just partially done he said. This is something Student Affairs Student Senate and the Office of Information Technology can do better.

Bible said the senate in office at the time of the election is responsible for testing the software. Because the students change every year, they often conduct the tests differently, he said. OIT will try to create more detailed testing directions for the Board of Elections by the end of this year so that no problems occur next time.

The testing was not thoroughly done

and that's a shared responsibility

Bible said.

The board will announce the election results tonight at 8:30 p.m. in Baker University Center's fourth-floor atrium.
