'Kings and queens' to raise AIDS awareness with drag challenge

Miley Cyrus has recently made headlines with provocative photos, but local residents can see a unique rendition of the star's music tonight.

Scottie Foertmeyer will play his own version of Cyrus in drag, Handjob Montana

at the fifth annual Athens AIDS Task Force Queen Challenge at Casa Nueva, 6 W. State Street.

I'm getting a band together to cover versions of Miley Cyrus' songs said Foertmeyer, a nursing student at Hocking College who originally created the persona for a Halloween costume. Of course mine are much more obscene.

There are several other drag king and queen acts booked for the event.

Performances range from covers of R. Kelly's film Trapped in the Closet to Gloria Gaynor's classic I Will Survive.

The challenge also features a raffle with prizes, including gift certificates to local businesses such as Broney's Alumni Grill, 7 W. Carpenter St., and Brenen's, 38 S. Court St.

Many contestants are first-time performers, including Luce Williams, a senior outdoor studies major performing the R. Kelly cover.

I've never done a drag performance before

but I'm glad to have the opportunity to fundraise while hopefully being funny and having a good time

Williams said.

Brigid Ratcliff, a senior social work major, will be performing I Will Survive in drag for the first time.

I'm a longtime karaoke singer

and it is one of my favorite songs

Ratcliff said. I know that it's going to be an awesome time.

The event collaborates with campus AIDS awareness week. All proceeds will benefit the task force, a non-profit organization funded through federal grants from the Ohio Department of Health, said Sue Armentrout, the social worker for the task force. The organization's office is located at 18 College St.

Those seeking a less rowdy occasion can attend a pasta event from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. and 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Church of the Good Shepherd, 64 University Terrace, said Sarah Ganson, intern for the task force.

The meal costs $5 and is all-you-can-eat, Ganson said. All proceeds are also donated to the task force, which works to raise AIDS awareness in seven counties.
