Officials announced today that Steven L. Schoonover, a 1967 graduate of Ohio University, has donated $7.5 million to the Scripps College of Communication.
The donation, which will be used to renovate Former Baker University Center, is the largest single cash gift from a living alumnus, topping a $5 million donation from Margaret M. and Robert D. Walter in 2000 for Walter Hall.
Greg Shepherd, dean of the college, announced the donation March 6 but did not reveal the donor.
Schoonover is the chief executive officer of Cellxion, LLC, a company he founded in 1995. Cellxion specializes in the construction and installation of telecommunications buildings and equipment.
OU estimates construction on the original Baker Center ' which will be renamed the Schoonover Center for Communication ' will cost more than $30 million. The entire cost of the construction project, which includes renovating E.W. Scripps Hall and the Radio-Television Building, is estimated at $35 million.
