Softball: Bobcats take 3 out of 4 games, secure spot in MAC Tournament

The Bobcats clinched a spot in the MAC Tournament and turned in some spectacular performances in the process this weekend, going 3-1 by sweeping Bowling Green and splitting with Toledo.

Emily Wethington set the tempo Friday as she was strong in the Bobcats' sweep of the Falcons. The freshman from New Palestine, Ind., pitched 9 1/3 innings, which included a complete-game shutout in game one of the doubleheader, and struck out 17 while allowing just three hits and one earned run.

Wethington's rise-ball, changeup and drop-ball proved to be a devastating trio of pitches for the Falcons as Wethington kept them guessing all game.

I'd say that my rise-ball

changeup and drop-ball are some of my best pitches Wethington said. Today

coach (Jill Matyuch) told me she wanted me to go at them and go at them hard and that's what I did.

Wethington showed that when senior-

said Sauter, who became the first Ohio pitcher with 400 career strikeouts Friday. She really set the pace for the whole game.

As great as Wethington was in the circle Friday, the Bobcats were just as great in the batter's box. The Bobcats (25-24, 10-12 MAC) shelled Falcons pitcher Hayley Weimer, amassing 10 hits and eight runs en route to an 8-0 mercy-rule win over the Falcons, which had the third-best record in Mid-American Conference play heading into Friday's series.

I'm really excited about our offense right now

Matyuch said. You do things the right way all year

sometimes it turns out

and sometimes it doesn't. It looks like there's a bit of luck on our side right now.

Game two of the doubleheader was a far cry from the offensive clinic the Bobcats put on in game one. The Bobcats had to grind it out and earn a win in the bottom of the seventh inning.

Senior Kristen Salvatore from Kirtland, Ohio, drove in Courtney Waters to give the Bobcats a thrilling win and a series sweep.

It raises our confidence level a ton

Salvatore said of the sweep. Every series is important

but I guess (Friday) we were easy-going

we were loose
