Softball: Despite early lead, 'Cats go winless in Columbus

Maureen McKelvey gave the Bobcats a three-run lead early yesterday, but it couldn't be maintained.

Ohio was outscored 10-3 in two losses against Ohio State.

After a three-run first inning to start the doubleheader, the Bobcats were unable to produce any runs against Buckeye pitchers.

Courtney Waters reached base on an error by the second baseman to start the inning. Shalene Petrich singled next and Kristen Salvatore walked to load the bases.

McKelvey stepped up to plate and hit a triple to center, scoring Waters, Petrich and Salvatore to put the score at 3-0.

McKelvey said scoring runs early and not being able to produce runs later made the loss tough.

We jumped on them early

McKelvey said. We did all we could.

Ohio State fired back with one run in each of the first three innings and three runs in the fourth. Another run in the bottom of the sixth widened the gap, 7-3. Ohio couldn't come back in the top of the seventh and took the loss.

Coach Jill Matyuch said the Ohio State pitchers were able to mix location and speed well with their pitches.

It's a lot harder if you're not used to playing at night Matyuch said. All in all I thought we played very well.

Petrich and Jordan Paden each had two hits to add to McKelvey's.

Candace Saucedo of Ontario, Calif. took the loss in game one after relieving Michelle Sauter in the top of the fourth. Saucedo's record for the season is now 1-3.

Saucedo said Ohio State batters wouldn't let up.

They were just very aggressive

overall

Saucedo said.

Emily Wethington pitched to start the second game and ended with the loss, evening out her record at 10-10.

Buckeye batters were held off until the bottom of the sixth, where they scored the only three runs of the game and got the win, 3-0.

Petrich and Alicia Catlette got Ohio's two hits in game two to the Buckeyes' nine.
