Despite dreary conditions and whipping winds, the Ohio University Women's Club met yesterday at the president's house, 29 Park Place, for their annual spring tea to celebrate the end of the year, welcome new board members and honor a member who passed away earlier this year.
The OU Women's Club is a unique woman-to-woman support group of female faculty, administrators and Board of Trustee members, and wives and domestic partners of those positions, said Jan Weckman, president of the club. A main mission of the club is to reach out to newcomers in the area. There are about 189 members in the entire organization, she said.
A six-year member of the club and two-year president, Weckman greeted about 30 guests at the door of the party, took pictures and directed them toward refreshments. First Lady Deborah McDavis welcomed her fellow members into her home. This is McDavis' fourth year as a member in the organization.
When McDavis first came to OU's campus when her husband became president in July 2004, the OU Women's Club was the first organization to greet her.
At the end of the party, Weckman invited the members onto the porch to remember Kay Snow, wife of faculty member Andrew Snow in the OU School of Information and Telecommunication Systems, who passed away Feb. 23. Stifling back tears, Weckman said a poem in her honor. McDavis released a white balloon into the sky as a tribute to their lost member.
