Your turn: Donate food via your mailbox

The annual National Association Letter Carrier Food Drive in Athens will be Saturday. Simply place food in plastic or paper grocery bags near your mailbox early in the day and a mail carrier will pick it up. The participating food pantries in Athens County are requesting that food be dated June 2008 and later. Items particularly needed are protein-rich canned goods including peanut butter, canned meat, tuna, chicken, beef stew and beans as well as canned fruits.

With the high price of gasoline and increasing prices of food, the requests for food assistance has risen among all the local food pantries. Many thanks to all who have helped in the past, and we would appreciate your support again this year.

If you have any questions, please call the Food Pantry at 590-7051 and leave a message, or call 593-5098.

Lynn Graham is chair of the Athens County Food Pantry.
