Ohio quarterback balances passes, politics

Since transferring from Los Angeles Southwest junior college a year ago, quarterback Theo Scott has been known mostly for his talent on the football field. But this spring, he has made a name for himself off it.

Scott threw for 743 yards and five touchdowns in helping the Bobcats to a fourth-place finish in the Mid-American Conference East Division, but his biggest victory this year came when he was elected as one of five senators at large this spring.

I wanted to be part of the school

Scott said. I went in to see (Vice President of Student Affairs Kent Smith) and asked him how I could get more involved in school and he pointed me toward Michael (Adeyanju).

Before the elections, Adeyanju, the newly elected Student Senate president, was looking for students to fill the five at-large positions and thought Scott would be a perfect fit.

We sought out people that were dedicated to bettering the university experience Adeyanju said. He's really hard-working and I definitely think he'll be able to deal with the time commitment.

Scott helped promote the Ability and Accountability (AAA) party and passed out fliers and T-shirts before the election, helping Adeyanju in any way possible since the elections culminated.

When football season comes around, though, Scott and Adeyanju know that Scott will need to take care of other responsibilities.

They know I'm pretty busy Scott said. Anything that (Adeyanju) wants me to do

I'll let him know if I can do it.

He's a real good guy and he helps me out. It's really not that big of a problem.

Busy is a candidate for understatement of the year.

Scott practices five times a week and plays in games primarily on Saturdays in the fall. He also works 12 hours per week in the off-season to which he will now add his student senate responsibilities. That doesn't even include the hours he spends in the classroom.

It gets kind of busy sometimes, Scott said. I just try to manage it the best that I can.

Offensive coordinator Tim Albin said that he has no problem with Scott's decision to spend more time involved in university-related activities. In fact

Albin thinks that any of his quarterbacks would excel in a similar position.

It is the reaction Scott has been hearing from all of his coaches.

They were all for it, Scott said. They have my back 100 percent.

The health administration services major said that he isn't looking for a career in politics

but thinks that his new position will pay dividends in the fall.

As far as leadership, it will enhance my future both on the field and off, Scott said.
