Jill Matyuch has resigned as coach of the Ohio softball team Athletics Director Jim Schaus said today.
Matyuch said she wanted to be closer to her family in southern California and has accepted a teaching position at Brea-Olinda High School in Brea, Calif.
My family is very important to me and
given recent circumstances I think that returning home needs to be my priority at this point in time Matyuch said.
In three seasons as the Bobcats coach Matyuch had an 83-97 record, including a 7-6 record in the postseason. This past season she led Ohio to its best record in six seasons (29-26) and then led the team to the finals of the Mid-American Conference Tournament for the first time since 1986.
I really appreciate the quality job Jill did for the athletic program during her tenure here
Schaus said. She not only did a job helping our program grow
but with the student athletes. We completely understand Jill's needing to go home and be with her family members.
In the three years before Matyuch's arrival at Ohio, the Bobcats were a combined 48-100-1 and made the MAC Tournament once. Under Matyuch the team averaged 27 wins a year and made the MAC Tournament all three seasons.
Obviously we think we have this going in the right direction and we have the right people here
Matyuch said. It's a difficult decision to make
but I feel it was one I had to make.
Under Matyuch, ten players have been named to All-Mac teams. This past season Courtney Waters was named first-team All-MAC and second-team All-Region. Michelle Sauter was named second-team All-MAC, Melissa Bonner and Emily Wethington were both named to the MAC All-Freshman Team.
Schaus said that this evening and tomorrow the university will begin its search for a new coach and added that he is very optimistic about getting a quality coach.
