Ohio University has agreed to pay more than $36,000 to nursing faculty who claim their contracts were unfairly changed, according to court documents.
Seven members of the nursing faculty at Ohio University-Zanesville reached agreements to teach summer sessions in 2005, but the university decreased their pay after classes had started, according to the lawsuit filed last April in the Ohio Court of Claims.
The university told the faculty members in June 2005 that it could not complete the contract as written and lowered the pay for each contract, according to the lawsuit. The faculty members filed grievances but they were denied.
The faculty members will be reimbursed according to their original contracts, according to the settlement approved June 3. The university will pay a total of $36,386. The original lawsuit asked for $36,361.
Faculty members are pleased with the settlement and feel a mistake has been corrected, said Cole Gerstner, lawyer for the faculty members.
The state of Ohio essentially agreed to pay the exact amount we asked for
he said. They basically agreed to fix this mistake.
