Your Turn: City's purchase of hybrid car fits with Athens' eco-awareness

In Caitlin McGlade's article on Tuesday about the city voting against purchasing a new gas guzzler

I feel that the city council deserves some credit for making that wise decision. In a time where everyone is faced with tight budgets, including college students such as myself, it's good to see the city doing more with less than trying to find more ways to pay for their budgeted costs. However, I think the city made that decision without more carefully considering alternatives to the proposed purchase. Not purchasing the new SUV may have saved the city some money, but in the meantime, they are still using the old Ford Explorer that probably isn't much better on gas mileage than the proposed SUV to purchase.- Fire Chief Robert Troxel's personal use and for hauling emergency equipment and trailers. For most of these purposes, a more fuel-efficient SUV would be better for traveling to training sessions, personal use by the fire chief and moderate hauling, depending upon the size of the SUV and the load.-
